As a tradesperson, you’re probably rushed off your feet busy tackling jobs rather than marketing yourself. While it’s great to be busy with jobs that pay the bills, unfortunately, work doesn’t always come regularly for tradespeople. Some months you can be inundated with job offers and then all of a sudden you find yourself in a quiet phase. That’s why it’s important to allocate time to promote yourself so that people know who you are and what you do to keep business coming your way.
Spending heaps of time on social media is unrealistic when you’re busy so planning marketing activities that can really get you noticed may be a better alternative for you. Quality over quantity is better than spending hours and hours tweeting!
Below, we look at 3 ways tradespeople can get noticed with marketing ideas that pack a punch and make an impact…
If you’ve got some spare time, why not do something big to help your local community or the area where you’d like to win new business.
You could help to renovate a local care home or help a family in need by repairing their boiler – anything that will make peoples lives easier or more enjoyable. By doing something good for free, you’ll not only feel great for it, but you’ll also attract some great publicity too. At first, the thought of this will raise alarm bells as this may come at a cost, however, the lasting benefits that you could reap as a result could be a game changer for your business. If you’re nervous to commit to something big, start off with a smaller project that’s cheap to do. You could even utilise your connections by asking other tradespeople in different fields to help out too – think DIY SOS!
To get noticed, you could get the general public involved by asking them to nominate who they think deserves your help via social media or your local paper. This idea is only worth doing if you make sure people know about it. Creating hype around the project will do wonders for your reputation and people will know you as an ethical and caring tradesperson. The bigger the gesture, the more public attention you’re likely to get.
If you’re proud of the work you do, why not share it with others?
Before and after images are the perfect way to demonstrate your work. Showcase your expertise by capturing every stage of your best projects and share the final results. You could do this by taking photos of your work, filming the progress or blogging about it and sharing all of the updates on social media. People will soon be impressed by your work and come to you for business.
If you’re on the job fixing or creating something that may be of interest to people, why not take a few minutes to film a ‘how to’ video of it. For instance: how to unblock a sink, how to bleed a radiator, how to put up shelves etc. (depending on your industry).
Building up a collection of ‘how to’ videos will portray you as the expert in your field and, naturally, your customers will want someone who knows what they’re doing.
You could post the videos on YouTube, social media platforms and if you have a website, post them as blog posts too. You could even do a live streaming video on Facebook if you’re comfortable with being live. Live videos allow viewers to comment and ask you questions which shows your audience that you’re authentic, happy to help and know your stuff. It also saves you time editing and uploading your videos individually.
Competitions are a great way to get people’s attention as everyone loves the chance to win something (most people, anyway). When running a competition, you first need to decide what the main aim is. Do you want people to share a post, like a page, follow you, opt for something, nominate someone, comment on your post? Whatever it is, there needs to be something in it for the user.
Think of something that would really create hype and get people talking. Giveaways are a great way to capture your audience’s attention. If the giveaway prize is appealing and you’re only asking people to do something simple for a chance to win, they’ll usually be happy participate.
